Prometheus is an open source monitoring and alerting system. Its powerful query language used to retrieve time series data can also be employed when defining alerts. Alerts actively notify users of irregular system conditions, sending messages to a variety of integrations such as Slack or PagerDuty.

Monitoring is one of the pillars of successful infrastructure. It has been called the base of the hierarchy of reliability. Monitoring is a must have for responding to incidents, detecting and debugging systemic problems, planning for the future, and generally understanding your infrastructure.

Prometheus is an open source monitoring system, begun at SoundCloud in 2013. The project was made public in early 2015 and since then has seen a rapid increase in adoption by the community. Prometheus’s ability to monitor a massive number of targets without consuming a massive amount of resources quickly made it an integral part of the toolkit of organizations shifting to cloud native infrastructure.
